A pressure washer will have a removable tip made of either colored plastic or metal. A steamer will always have a permanent metal tip that looks like a pipe. However there are several variations and kinds of tips such as a fan tip. But the best is the pipe as shown in the videos. The biggest difference between the two machines is one will damage your roof no matter what, and one will not. A steamer is designed for ice dam removal and a pressure washer is not. A steamer will operate at 100 psi and at a temperature of 250-300 degrees F. Steam is produced at 212 degrees. But gentle steam is produced at even greater temperatures, around 250 F minimum. A pressure washer typically runs at a minimum of 500-1000 psi and generally cannot produce temperatures greater than 200 degrees F. So a pressure washer doesn’t even truly produce steam, and relies on warm water at high pressure to remove ice. Pressure is bad news on any roof. A steamer relies on temperature not pressure to remove the ice. Below is a video that shows the danger of allowing a pressure washer on your roof.
