As a roofer I have tried literally all methods of ice dam removal. Methods such as hammers, ice melt chemicals, salt socks, even torches. However all these methods are inferior to ice dam steaming. Therefore I compare ice dam steaming to a hot knife through frozen butter on a glass plate. Because it just works extremely well. If you tried hammering an ice pick through the frozen butter you would probably break the plate, right? So the plate represents your roof.
